The Selous reserve is dissected by the Rufiji River and is joined by the Great Ruaha in spectacular fashion just up-river from Steigler's Gorge. There are large herds of elephant, buffalo, sable and roan antelope and the Rufiji River teems with hippos, crocodile and exotic bird life. The Selous is an excellent choice for an adventurous family safari.
Situated on the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers Lodge offers a luxurious base from which you can explore the reserve and view its wildlife – there are even some of the last wild black rhino left in Africa to look for.
A stay at Sand Rivers Selous will offer your family excellent walking country, some fun boating opportunities in the Rufiji river, some rewarding game drives by open four-wheel drive vehicles through the bush and exciting on foot safaris for the more adventurous. On the walks you are accompanied by a knowledgeable, armed guide, and these walks can involve exciting encounters with anything from a dung beetle to herds of elephant. By boat you can explore the endless channels of the Rufiji, surrounded by hippos and crocodiles, a particularly enjoyable experience early in the morning with a packed breakfast taken on the banks of the river.
Accommodation at Sand Rivers Selous is in spacious open-fronted cottages made of stone and thatch, all of which are raised up on the banks of the Rufiji with sweeping views out across the river.
The main guest areas are set close to the river and are generous in terms of space. The lodge has a grand yet cosy feel with an atmosphere that is familiar, yet with an unbeatable attention to detail and service.
