Okonjima - the Africat Foundation

Okonjima is the home of the AfriCat Foundation and the Hanssen family who were avid cattle farmers in past years until the need to address the balance of livestock losses and the preservation of Namibia’s big cats became apparent. In the early nineties Africat opened a sanctuary to protect Cheetah and Leopard from irate livestock farmers, this sanctuary has now developed into a much-needed Environmental Education, Carnivore Research and Animal Welfare facility.

A stay at Okonjima offers a chance to get close to Namibia’s cat population and to learn about their threats, habits and welfare in this harsh environment. As Namibia slowly grew as a tourist destination Okonjima embraced this and constructed a variety of very comfortable guest accommodations at the Africat location.

This veterinary and education project has led to literally hundreds of these beautiful cats being protected. At any time several dozen are located on the Okonjima Reserve and you will have a unique opportunity to see them and learn of the work of the project.

Your family will be able to enjoy an exciting selection of activities whilst at Okonjima. You might like to radio track the collared cheetah within the 370 acre Cheetah enclosure, or sight Leopard from the various hides or with a radio on board a four by four vehicle. In addition to learning about these gracious big cats you can also enjoy night sightings of Porcupines, Honey-badgers and Caracal, fabulous bird watching, and visits to San Bushmen villages to see how they live and cope in the unforgiving environment.

A stay at Okonjima perfectly compliments any tailored safari itinerary through Namibia. Your family are sure to enjoy and learn from the experience.
