Little Kulala

Little Kulala sits in a private 21,000 hectare reserve at the gateway to the Soussusvlei dunes.

Set out in the timeless desert landscape are 11 climate-controlled, thatched villas with bleached decks and a plunge pool. Each villa has a rooftop 'skybeds' for stargazing, and guest areas include a wonderfully stocked library and wine cellar. Little Kulala is the perfect location for imaginative children who want to point out excitedly the constellations of a clear starry sky.

In this area of Namibia you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see the desert-adapted wildlife that have adapted to the harsh conditions of the terrain. Animals such as ostrich, springbok and gemsbok eke out a careful and sparse existence on these desolate sand blown expanses. Smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox and aardwolf can be seen at night in the cool desert air, and one bird, the aptly named dune lark, can be found nowhere else but here as it is so dependent is it on the area's characteristic sands.

The area of Soussusvlei is very exciting indeed and in addition to gazing in awe at the immense dunes and their striking hues of apricot, orange and red there are plenty of activities to enjoy.

Your family will enjoy guided drives and walks in the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve learning about many of the diverse desert-adapted animals and plants whilst being surrounded by simply stunning views. An additional treat is a balloon safari that offers the unique experience soaring silently above the desert before landing for a champagne breakfast.

‘Sossusvlei’ itself translates as 'the gathering place of water', and, odd as it may seem, in good years seasonal rains succeed in reaching the dunes, creating temporary lakes that mirror the sand dunes surrounding them. The vleis (dunes) have evocative names such as Hidden Vlei and Dead Vlei. The seemingly uniform red-gold sands that stretch wave-like to the horizon have led to another name: the Sand Sea.
