Chongwe House is located at the end of a massive winterthorn grove, with views stretching out onto the mountainous escarpment that are spectacular. The view of the nearby mountainous escarpment is spectacular. Chongwe’s furniture in it’s guest area has been carved from a single huge fallen winterthorn tree, it very much appears to have fallen across the room. Beautifully soft coloured pebbles from the Chongwe River have been embedded in the ceilings.
The ground floor bedrooms are each entered through a tunnel which gives the feeling of walking through a cave. The downstairs bathrooms have water pouring out of the stone ceiling instead of the normal shower rose, whilst the upstairs showers are waterfalls. “Taps” are made from bone and wood and the exquisitely carved basins have been carved out of wood and white marble by the famous Zambian artist, Eddie Mumba. The upstairs bedrooms have unusual baths, from which you have a view across the bush. Chongwe house is eccentric and flamboyant in it’s design and will beguile both young and old alike.
There is so much to do at Chongwe River Camp. The game viewing is exceptional, and few other places can give you the choice of game drives during the day and at night, guided walks, canoeing or motor boating. Fishing is also a popular option. After a couple of days in a 4 x 4 walkikng adds an extra dimension to African game viewing, enabling you to really experience the tranquillity of the african bush without the background noise of a jeep. An equally attractive way to experience Africa quietly is to float along the fabulous calm rivers in a canoe, either powered by yourself or your guide.
