What makes a great family safari?

Getting it right

This might be the only time your family takes a safari – so we have to get it right first time. You’re off to a good start by finding this website! You now have access to our 18 years experience arranging superb family safaris.

Every family is unique. You know you want to go to Africa but different family members have different interests, needs and aspirations. There seem so many options on offer.

Call Africa Excusive at an early stage. You don’t need to know about Africa, just tell us about your family, your dreams, what you want out of the holiday and we’ll design the perfect itinerary for you.

Here are the things we think are important:-

Safety

Safaris are adventurous and exciting. We ensure your family’s safety by designing the holiday carefully, by using the best safari camps and lodges with mature, expert guides. You travel in well maintained vehicles, boats and planes and are met and transferred reliably by dedicated local partners.

If a plane is delayed or in the unlikely event that someone falls ill, we and our local partner act immediately to sort things out and keeping your holiday on track.

We avoid trouble spots and if you’ve booked a holiday to somewhere that runs into trouble we’ll change your holiday to another country, or offer to postpone your holiday or refund you.

Designing your holiday

Your holiday will be designed by either John Burdett, Warwick Hoffman, John Harvey or Laura Burdett with over 60 years Africa travel experience between us!

We start by doing a lot of listening so we fully understand your family’s dreams and desires. Then we will design a holiday with a sequence of wonderful places which will combine to provide exactly what you are seeking.

We take into account the weather patterns, seasonal animal movements, comfort levels at different lodges, the range of activities available and any special interests you have and your family’s age range.

We never suggest you rush – if a place is good, it’s worth staying a while to settle in and get to know the guides and the area. Each new place on your itinerary will complement the others so the whole trip is beautifully paced and balanced.

What does it cost?

The cost should be roughly the same as if you were to somehow book it all yourselves direct. So you get the expertise and support for free!

We usually ask your approximate budget at the start as that will influence the design of the holiday.

These holidays are a world apart from the cheaper package holidays where hundreds of people are all doing the same thing. As a rough guide, a two week Africa Exclusive family safari will cost around £5,000 per adult and a bit less for under 12’s.

Africa Exclusive is fully licensed through the Civil Aviation Authority ATOL scheme and we maintain a separate financial failure cover through Travel and General Insurance services.

Choosing the right lodges

We get this right by being around a long time. We regularly visit the safari lodges and have built long term relationships so they really value us and our clients.

Africa Exclusive is completely independent and owns no lodges or camps, so we are free to recommend places that are ideal for you.

The lodges and camps are small scale and in beautiful remote locations. You will always have proper beds, and en-suite wc and shower in secure accommodation with insect screening.

Here are a few examples of different accommodation types:

  • Chitabe Camp in Botswana is a permanent luxury tented camp that is one of the most exciting areas for big cat sightings.
  • Sabuk Lodge's Eagle Cottage in Kenya is a purpose built family suite with two bedrooms, a private pool and living area in glorious scenery with abundant wildlife.
  • Nomads mobile camp in Tanzania is regularly moved across the Serengeti to follow the migration. This is simpler yet still very comfortable.
  • The food on safari is always good, sometimes amazingly so. We can arrange surprise bush breakfasts by a waterhole, and special family dinners under the stars with the sounds of Africa all around you.

    Guides and Activities

Your guides are the single most important element of your safari. We will usually arrange for your family to have a private guide wherever you go. This gives you complete flexibility and allows you to build a series of experiences together. African guides love families and depending where you go we can give you opportunities to enjoy fascinating walks, boat rides, canoeing and fishing, quad bikes and horse riding as well as safari drives by open vehicle.
