Family Islands of the Indian Ocean

• All safari countries can be linked with a variety of islands and beaches either same day or with an overnight stop en-route
• There is a wide choice of places from full service five star hotels in Mauritius to desert island hideaways off the coast of Mozambique or Zanzibar.
• Each area has its own seasonality. Generally, avoid the more southerly islands in their winter (June to September).

Your family may be looking for a more substantial hotel with children’s facilities, and other young people for your children to meet. In this case Mauritius, Zanzibar and the Kenya coast areas are all worth considering, though all have subtly different seasonality.

Those seeking a quieter spot would love one of the little “desert islands” off the coast of Mozambique. Vamizi has spacious family villas and amazing snorkelling, diving and deep sea fishing, August is also the whale watching season. Hop over to neighbouring Ibo Island to see the old ports forts, local fishermen and silversmiths at work.

Zanzibar, the spice island has a rich and fascinating history, a famous “Old Stone Town” and many charming smaller hotels. Neighbouring islands include the little eco island of Chumbe and the divers paradise of Mafia.
